Advocacy is a cornerstone of our mission and a critical strategy in our effort to achieve social change and systematic reform on the issue of violence against women.
Our Role
• We are leaders in the Jewish community on VAW issues and work in collaboration with secular and faith-based organizations
• We facilitate the collaboration of individuals, groups, community agencies and organizations to design and deliver VAW programming and educational materials
• We act as the catalyst to bring together a diverse array of experts and advocates to develop strategies to promote social change to end violence against women
• We create partnerships with like-minded community groups to influence policy makers
• We provide a Jewish perspective and voice to sector roundtables in order to advocate for change and best practices for women who have experienced violence
• We train social work student interns about violence against women and the need for advocacy to create change
A Sampling of our Advocacy Achievements
• “There is a Jewish woman you know being abused”, a bold and controversial print and billboard campaign that targeted abuse within the Jewish community. Designed to educate the Jewish community and to serve as a model for other ethnic and religious groups to expose this hidden secret and bring it into the public forum.
• “Protect Yourself, Stop the Violence Against You”, a practical guide for women who are experiencing abuse, a key information resource for over 25 years.
• Developed and distributed youth-directed educational materials in response to the need for greater awareness on the prevalence of dating abuse.
• Conceived and convened“Sexual Assault on Campus, Exposing the Truth", the first Canadian conference on Sexual Assault on Campus featuring workshops and lectures by Canadian experts and attended by academics, social service providers, students and researchers. Funding partners included Department of Justice Canada, Justice Quebec, Minister of Culture Communication & Women’s Condition and the Province of Quebec.
• Presentation of numerous public forums on topics such as The Role of Men in Ending Violence Against Women, theatrical performances and workshops targeted to prevention and better understanding of violence against women.
• Partnership in FLEW (Family Law Education for Women), a project that identified the need for simple and easily understood legal information for women ending relationships and the development of “Why Do I Need A Jewish Divorce? Questions & Answers for Jewish Women”.
