Act to End Violence Against Women
Campaigns

Act To End Violence Against Women supports and protects the lives of women and their families who have experienced abuse through education, advocacy and action. Throughout the year, we conduct campaigns and host events across the country to raise funds to support our work and to raise awareness of violence against women in our communities.

Walk In Her Shoes

Walk In Her Shoes is a virtual fund raising walk in Montreal to raise funds for our work to end violence against women. Walk In Her Shoes has been held every year since 2000 with hundreds of participants, sponsors and donors taking part.  In 2011, we successfully adapted the event to a virtual Walk format.  In 2012, the 12th annual Walk will take place in April with continued support from members, donors and the corporate community.

Mountains of Mittens

For the past 20 years, Act To End Violence Against Women members and supporters have been knitting much-needed mittens and hats for at-risk children to combat our Canadian winters. An army of dedicated, industrious women turns their passion to end violence against women into beautiful, useful and practical items that help thousands of children stay warm. Wool & patterns are available.

The following are unedited excerpts from thank you notes sent to us by young Mountains of Mittens recipients:

“Dear Mountains of Mittens

How are you Thank you. My mitten can keep me warm. My hat will keep me healthy. I will be cold if I do not have gloves.”

“Dear Mountain of Mittens the mittens are two warm so we cant get as cold so we can play in the snow ol day and we can have fun going donw the hill.”

Shelter Drives

In December 2005, we received a critical call from a Toronto area women's shelter that was in desperate need of 'move-out' kits to provide women leaving the shelter with the basic necessities to set up a home.  Many women flee abusive homes with only the clothes on their back and have none of their personal belongings or household items with them.  Act To End Violence Against Women quickly galvanized their supporters into action.  Within three weeks, Act To End Violence Against Women had gathered enough supplies to create 40 move-out kits.

Each kit contained a set of dishes, cutlery, pots and pans, mixing bowls, kitchen utensils, kettle, toaster oven, towels, linens, pillows, blankets and cleaning products to help them set up a new home for their families.

Encouraged by this outpouring of support, Act To End Violence Against Women has launched other Shelter Drives over the years to collect women's essentials for residents preparing to leave the shelter.  Our Shelter Drives have provided everything from household items to books, bedding, children’s DVDs, clothing, and whatever else a woman needs to feel more prepared to re-enter the world outside the shelter.

Our goal is to implement 2 shelter drives per year. We welcome your participation in this important project. Please call Act to End Violence Against Women at 1-866-333-5942 or contact us at info@acttoendvaw.org
